African Hide Deeds Chest

The box is made from thick, stiff, rawhide. Dark brown to black in colour and decorated with strips of lighter hide arranged in geometric patterns.

The box is closed with a very large wrought iron hasp and staple fastened with a very large contemporary padlock.

These boxes were used by landowners agents when travelling across the country to collect rents and other payments. Unique storage or decorative storage box.
