Who We Are
The Moli d'en Portella project began in 2016 when Chris Cleere, a heritage conservation consultant and art & antiques dealer, purchased a derelict windmill on the outskirts of Santanyí on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

After more than two decades working as a consultant for governments, NGO's and universities on the preservation of international cultural heritage sites, Chris decided to leave his native UK and settle in Mallorca as a first step towards retirement.
Not wanting to stop working or waste his broad expertise and experience - and having recognised the plight of Mallorcan windmills - it was clear that it was time to buy and restore his own heritage site and start a project that might become a model to help save what were once a prevailing feature of the island's landscape.

Originally built as a grain mill, the Moli d'en Portella underwent a number of later phases, including the addition of a bakery and at least one other, as yet undetermined, secondary agricultural/industrial function.
The Moli d'en Portella was purchased in 2016 with the aim of developing an archaeological research project to determine the historical development of the site and from the data produced determine and implement a conservation, restoration and building re-use project.
There are thousands of disused windmills on Mallorca and our aim is to use the Moli d'en Portella project as a possible model for not only the presentation of windmills as historic monuments, but also as working, self sufficient energy generators and affordable venues for start-up micro manufacturing and service businesses.

To support and help fund the project Chris' other passion - finding and restoring art and antiques - is being added into the project with the hope that an associated art and antiques gallery will soon open in Santanyí to help publicise, fund and promote the project.
This is the story of the whole project from inception to its ultimate conclusion, hopefully along the way informing a little, entertaining a little and maybe even showing the workings of a curious mind....
