Our experience in architectural conservation exposed a serious gap in the professional knowledge. The accepted convention for replacement of lost elements or architectural detail is one of “like-for-like”. This convention works well in all cases except for the replacement or repair of eighteenth century terracotta such as that produced by the Coade factory in London.
A fascination with the artisan style and manufacturing processes used to produce this material lead to a five year research project that resulted in the establishment of a production facility to once again produce “Coade stone” from the original ingredients using the original manufacturing process thus filling the gap in the professional knowledge.
